The Joy of Pigs: Rooting Out the Truth
By Galina Pembroke
Calling someone a pig implies that they are dirty, greedy, or otherwise unworthy of our respect. Yet in reality the pig is clean, odorless, and smart. The more we discover about the history and mysteries of pigs, the clearer it is that they demand respect rather than inclusion in our recipes.

Pet Loss, the Inspirational Story of My Dog Companions
By Connie Bowen
There I was, standing in the veterinarian’s office looking at the X-Rays she had placed up on the lighted wall, hearing news that every pet owner dreads. “Do you see this tumor right here?†she said. “It’s what’s taking up all the protein in his blood and causing him to vomit and have the diarrhea. It’s inoperable, too large. There’s nothing to be done.†My beloved 11 year old yellow lab, Simon, was not going to be going home with me that day. He wagged his tail and whined to go home. “You can take him with you if you want, but the tumor could burst at any time and he’s not going to be getting any better like we’d hoped.â€
After I left her office alone, crying and talking to myself all the way home, I shook my head. I’d held him for those last few minutes while she administered the shot that put him to sleep. “He wanted to go home, but he couldn’t,†I told myself. The guilt crept in, but I pushed it aside. I thought back to a time 12 years earlier, and I knew the grief that was starting to seep in would be manageable this time, for I remembered the song of life told to me by my aged German Shepherd who had faced the same prognosis 12 years earlier.

The Geriatric Set: Accommodating Elderly Cats
By Brian Kohlmeier
Coming to terms with one’s own mortality is something we all have to face at one time or another during our lives. I’ve had my own share of introspective moments on life, as I have seen the decline of elderly relatives’ health, and experienced the aches and pains associated with getting on in years (and I’m only 36-years-old). The aging process forces us to make adjustments to cater to surfacing limitations, whether we like to embrace them or not.
Our pets zip through their lifecycles much faster than we do, and that point when we need to start making special concessions for them can sneak up without warning. I am currently the proud owner of three fuzzy felines, two of which are in the midst of their twilight years. Göst (15-years-old) and Betty (10-years-old) may revisit moments of their youth by the hyperactiveness that is Otis (8-months-old), but I can see the aging effects when compared to the young spitfire. About a year ago, I started doing things a bit differently to make life easier for them, but it has since spiraled into me spoiling them to the point that they have got to think they hit the kitty lottery by having me for a father.

Can You Really Train A Cat? Is It Worth The Trouble?
by Niall Kennedy
Cats are notoriously independent and have a mind of their own. Can you really teach a cat new tricks?
Cat owners often think that their cat is just too moody to listen. Some owners feel their cats are un-trainable simply because they are arrogant. The fact is many times pets don’t obey because they don’t understand what you want from them. So, if you have tried to train your cat, you may not be doing it right.

Scientists were barking up the right tree when they began writing the genetic biography of man’s best friend. The result, unleashed a few days ago, was the complete sequence of the dog genome - the full set of genes that make-up Canis familiaris.
The book of the dog is for-scientists-only, its pages devoted to the exact order of chemical units in the dog’s 19,300 genes.
