Grimsley, 116802

Grimsley is a very handsome, regal cat who was found in St. B with a rhinestone-studded collar. He is very affectionate. Grimsley is Domestic Short Hair about 1 year old. He was vaccinated & dewormed upon his arrival & would love to be adopted to a great home! His adoption fee of $48.06 includes his neuter, vaccine, free pet insurance & much more!

Princess, 115281

This is one great family pick! Left at the back entrance of the shelter with a box of her puppies, this pretty DobieX has been with us since November 17, 2005. She was found with a note from her owners that read they could not afford to care for her any longer, and that they hoped we’d find a good home for her & her pups. Princess did extremely well in foster care, is housebroken & good with the kids she’s met. She likes other dogs & needs a family to love, and to love her. $88.06 to adopt, half off as a longterm dog.

Fees include vet exam, vaccine, pet insurance, microchip & much more!

Did Valentine’s Day leave you feeling a little lonely?

Prancer, 115901

We need to find Prancer a home! Found stray in Moose Lake, Prancer has a congenital neurological condition that causes her to high-step (hence the name!) & some weakness. Prancer is a very loving, and very loveable pup who needs a home with someone who understands that although she has special needs, she also needs someone special! We’d love to find a home with another well mannered dog for Prancer to live with. This nearly-housebroken pup is ~7 months old and $139.00 adoption fee applies.

Casanova, 116144

Casanova was found on St. Anne’s Road in early January after living in the area since the summer. Casanova is truly a charmer; starts off a little shy and once he knows you, watch out ’cause he’s a loverboy! If you’re suffering the post Valentine’s Day-blues, you’ll be lonely no more with Casanova in your life! Only $48.06 to adopt, his love is priceless!

Fees include vet exam, vaccine, pet insurance, microchip & much more!

Jacob, 91283

This dog has so many wonderful qualities it’s impossible to list them all. Jacob is a very gentle, quiet and affectionate dog who has been with us since November! He is often overlooked in the kennels due to his quiet & reserved nature- until he knows you! Jacob loves to play, wrestle and be an all around gentle goofball. He’d be perfect with a teenager to throw him a ball and love him to bits. We know Jacob is waiting for the perfect owner to find him- could it be you? As a longterm dog his fee is 50% off, only $88.06.

Casanova, 116144

Casanova he sure is! This loverboy was a stray kitty from St. Anne’s Road where he’d been hanging around since summer. He can be a tad shy to start off but once he’s warmed up to you, he truly is a little Casanova. He may do best in a home with other friendly cats to help bring him out of his shell. Casanova is about 3 years old and litter box trained. Adult cats are $79.00 & includes pet insurance, microchip, neuter & much more!

Fees include vet exam, vaccine, pet insurance, microchip & much more!

Jet, 114037

Jet is a very active, playful dog who can fetch a ball for hours. He’d be a great match for a family with older kids who want a dog they can play with. Because he is so smart, Jet needs someone who is going to exercise his mind as well as his body. A great pick for fly ball! As a long-term shelter dog adoption fee is only $88.06.

Bebe, 104298

Bebe is a sweet baby! Surrendered to us in November, Bebe needs a new home, preferably one with a warm lap for her to occupy. This sweet chubby girl is about 4 years old & one of the most friendly, affectionate cats in the shelter. Her adoption fee is only $48.06 as a long-term shelter cat.

Fees include vet exam, vaccine, pet insurance, microchip & much more!

Cornelius, 114479

Cornelius is a wonderful dog- why is he homeless?! “Corny” as he’s affectionately known with the staff, loves people and is very affectionate. Initially very frightened & timid, he’s advanced by leaps & bounds to become the well rounded dog he is today. Corny listens very well, is good on a leash and is also very gentle. Due to his shy nature, he’s a great pick for a mature family without young kids. Only 1.5 years old, Corny has a tremendous amount of potential & is a staff favourite. Half off adoption fee, only $88.06.

Bebe, 104298

Looking for a lap-warmer? Meet Bebe! A very friendly and people-oriented cat, Bebe needs someone to love and to love her back. Bebe is very social & cat-friendly and ideally will go to a home with another cat she can play with to assist her in losing weight as she is quite a chubby cat. Bebe is sure to win you over within moments of meeting her. Half off to adopt, only $48.06!

Niko, 109846

Niko needs you help! With us since he was only 12 weeks old, when he came into us with a terrible skin condition on July 28, 2005, Niko has literally grown up before our eyes. Niko is an incredibly resilient ~9 month old dog, as he struggled thru this terrible skin condition and has persevered! He enjoys other dogs & did really well in his foster home. Niko is still a puppy at heart and is now a very healthy dog. As a long term dog his fee is reduced- only $73.06. Please consider Niko for a new addition to your family!

Mabel, 112801

Poor Mabel was abandoned in our parking lot by her owner, along with her companion kitty Markie. Both lovely, deserving cats are available for adoption at Petcetera on Regent Avenue, 661-0790; ideally we’d like to place these girls together, if someone can find it in their heart to take them both in, otherwise we will separate them. They’ve been in the shelter since September & over at Petcetera since November. $96.12 for both cats includes vet exams, first vaccine, pet insurance & more!

How To Find a Search and Rescue Dog Training School

How To Find a Search and Rescue Dog Training School

by Melissa Buhmeyer

There are many things dogs can be trained to do but, of all the tasks a working dog can perform, search and rescue ranks the highest for needing qualified, professional trainers. A Search and Rescue (SAR) dog’s performance, quite literally, can determine life or death to a human in need.

As shocking as it may sound, there is no set of standards for rescue dog training. Subsequently, rescue clubs, teams, and individuals emerge as trainers, when, in fact, they may know little, or nothing at all, about training a SAR dog. Attending seminars and reading books on the subject are worthwhile endeavors, but they do not constitute being a SAR dog trainer. Sadly, in a large percentage of cases, this is an assumption not only made, but followed, and replicated. In some cases, those touting themselves as SAR dog trainers scarcely have enough knowledge to teach a dog simple parlor tricks, let alone promptly and accurately scenting or tracking skills, where a human life hangs in the balance.
