Some breed experts think the Chihuahua is actually of European or Asian origin. Tips on Chihuahua Training

Tips on Chihuahua Training

By Connie Limon

A good obedience class to train your Chihuahua is always helpful. However, you don’t have to go to obedience classes. Many classes are especially for handling big, out-of-control dogs and may emphasize force methods to try and dominate and calm these dogs. These methods are not good for Chihuahuas, or any dog for that matter. If you run into instructors and classes like this, you are better off training your Chihuahua on your own or with other small-dog owners.

Old-fashioned force-training methods are ineffective and no fun for your dog either. Chihuahuas respond best to amendable training and only the gentlest of techniques.

What Chihuahua Puppy Really Makes Your Heart Race?

What Chihuahua Puppy Really Makes Your Heart Race?

By Connie Limon

According to the AKC standard a Chihuahua should not exceed 6 pounds. In real life, however, they do. Some Chihuahuas weigh in at 10 pounds or more. Some Chihuahua have longer legs and are lighter boned that is described in the AKC standard. Their muzzles tend to be longer and they have a more “deerlike†look. This type of Chihuahua is labeled a “deer type Chihuahua.†The deer type Chihuahua may have some advantages as a pet. They tend to be better walking companion and they fare better in obedience trials. They are less susceptible to hypoglycemia. However, if you want a “true†Chihuahua you can show or breed, then you need to get one within the standard. If you want a “true†Chihuahua you can love, get whatever appeals to you the most.

Some Chihuahuas are at the other end of not so perfect according to the AKC standards weighing in at as little as 2 pounds. A 2 pound Chihuahua is unofficially named “teacup†or “pocket†Chihuahuas. They are not a separate type of Chihuahua but simply unusually small specimens of the breed. They are somewhat more fragile and vulnerable to hypoglycemia, but not at all “unhealthy†or full of health problems just because they are smaller.

Yo Quiero Chihuahuas: the Tiny Lap Dog with the Big Personality

Yo Quiero Chihuahuas: the Tiny Lap Dog with the Big Personality

By Evan Richer

This small, spunky dog breed is famous for coining the phrase Yo quiero Taco Bell. Who doesn’t remember the commercials in which the Chihuahua expressed his love for Taco Bell food? Tiny and energetic, the Chihuahua typically weighs between 2-6 lbs and is 6 inches to 9 inches in height. They are one of the longest living dog breeds, sometimes living up to 20 years.

The Chihuahua is recognized by the AKC. Any color including solid, splashed and marked are acceptable coat colors. The Chihuahua has two coat types. One is smooth, short, close and glassy. The other is long, soft, flat and slightly curly with an undercoat. Contrary to what you would expect, the short coated dogs shed more than those with long hair. The short and long haired dogs are actually the same breed so you will often find both short and long haired puppies in the same litter. Short haired Chihuahuas need an occasional brushing while long haired Chihuahuas need brushed daily.

The Chihuahua Becomes Popular!

The Chihuahua Becomes Popular!

By Connie Limon

When Xavier Cugat, the rumba king, appeared with his Chihuahuas in movies and on television in the late 1930s and 1940s the Chihuahua breed received great exposure and became quite popular.

Because of the Chihuahua’s exposure in movies and television, the Chihuahua began one of the most meteoric rises in numbers of any breed in American Kennel Club history. The Chihuahua reached its peak in 1964 and became the third most popular breed in the United States. About a century after its discovery, the Chihuahua became one of the most recognizable breeds. The AKC now registered an average of 40,000 Chihuahuas each year. Both long and short haired Chihuahuas are popular as lap dogs around the world.

Choosing a Chihuahua Puppy

Choosing a Chihuahua Puppy

By Connie Limon

First of all you want your Chihuahua to look like a Chihuahua. He or she should be a tiny dog with a fairly stocky build. The head of a Chihuahua is rounded; the muzzle is short and not squashed in. A Chihuahua’s ears stand erect. As young Chihuahuas, the ears will be floppy. The eyes are large. If you want to show or breed your Chihuahua you will want to choose according to the standard of perfection set by the American Kennel Club.

A passionate Chihuahua breeder will have photos of the sire and dam as well as the entire family. The appearance of the sire and dame of the litter is the best predictor of the looks of their offspring.

What do Fish, Chihuahaus, Pit Bulls and Horses have in common?

(Q) What do Fish .. Chihuahuas .. Pit Bulls and Horses have in common?

(A) That’s all you will be reading about during April 24-30, 2006 week!

It’s been quite a challenge for me .. keeping up with the postings here at .. [The Blog], as my offline work increasingly takes more and more of my time … that is doing accounting and income tax! Most of the posts seen in this blog have been randomly selected from a variety of sources, and posted .. or rather PRE-POSTED … by changing the timestamp to a future date and time.

Well .. this week will be no different! If anything .. it will be worse!

However, I have noticed that my ‘library’ of article resources have been growing at an alarming rate, that if I don’t catch up soon .. some great tips and articles will be falling “off the table” (so to speak) - and I will miss posting them!

So I scoured today to find as many articles that I could - that I have bookmarked - that are related in some way … and have pre-posted these articles throughout this upcoming week! Some days will have articles posting every 4 hours, some days every 3 hours .. there is one day this week .. that for a short period of time .. the article postings will average one every two hours!

Will I Be Posting Too Much?

Of Course I will be! (but how else can I catch up?)

But - don’t worry … you won’t really have to sift through all of the articles this week - unless you want to - because I will tell you NOW what topics you can expect:

* April 24, 2006 - FISH - articles about fish, aquariums, tips and other tidbits you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask

* April 25, 2006 - CHIHUAHUA - articles about the chihuahua breed dog .. including tips on training, health care and other suggestions that can be applied to most other smaller breeds of animals

* April 26-27, 2006 - PIT BULLS - articles about pit bulls, the myths, the stories .. and other tips including training, health care and other suggestions that can be applied to most other larger breed of animals .. There are a lot of articles, so I have spread this over two days

* April 28-29, 2006 - HORSES - articles about horses, breeds, stories and other health care and training tips that every horse owner should know

I would be interested in reading your comments about what you think of the upcoming “themed” article posting days … and if this is something readers would be interested in seeing in May 2006 and on. Please feel free to comment to this article, your thoughts as the week progresses..

Is it better to mix it up?

Or, is it better to group them together?

Enjoy the articles … I will be back May 2, 2006 (..after the Income Tax Deadline of May 1, 2006 here in Canada) .. although, I may be posting a few articles, here and there, during the week - if time permits.
