Health Care for Older Dogs

Health Care for Older Dogs

By Valerie Goettsch

Dogs are wonderful, loyal companions and an integral part of our families. Time flies, though, and in a few short years we start seeing changes in our faithful friends. There may be white hair around their muzzle, they may be less active and energetic, and they may be a little slow getting up. As a dog ages, his metabolism also slows, just like ours, and his health care and nutritional needs may change. Here is a look at how we can make life a little easier for our aging pets.

This was my dinner .. Maxxie and Sophie Approved!

I’m back on my diet …

So, I’ve started THE HART SERIES over on my Battling-Obesity.com blog … I’m trying to lose weight, get into shape and counting points the WeightWatchers.ca way. To keep me honest, I’m also taking pictures of all my dinners and unusual recipes and posting it every night before I go to sleep.

I thought I would toss a few pictures here now and then .. when our Papillon dogs Maxxie and Sophie get into the picture (Jan 9th) or I deliberately include them (Jan 11th) .. They love to watch me make the salad and are a great big part of my daily dinner routine. They love:

A Biscuit For The Cutest Puppy?

I’ve always wanted to have one of those “Cutest Pets” sites since I’ve started blogging May 31, 2005 under the “PetLvr” site name. I actually created a little script that I still have! .. it’s called “PETLVR WARS” and I had placed it on my old Blogspot blog .. but it really didn’t work out the way I wanted it to. It’s still a live link .. although I haven’t been promoting the site or feature since last summer July 2005

Believe it or not .. I started out blogging under the “PapillonLvr” site name. It is my online gaming name, in most cases and was my original pet site. When I decided to go up the animal change from a papillon (PapillonLvr.com) to all kinds of pets (PetLvr.com) … I decided that PapillonLvr.com would strictly be pictures of papillon dogs .. and more specifically pictures of our pet papillon dogs Maxxie and Sophie (plus our cat Zeussie).

Dogs, Cats and Treatment for Diabetes Mellitus

DIABETES MELLITUS IN DOGS AND CATS

Diabetes in the dog and cat and the treatment for diabetes mellitus are interesting and challenging topics. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disorder where the body is unable to regulate blood sugar levels. (There is another dissimilar disease called Diabetes Insipidus that is associated with the pituitary gland.) Each case seems to be different, and regulating the diabetic dog or cat so that their blood glucose levels are as normal as possible is vitally important. The real problem with a diabetic dog or cat is that even in the presence of sugar (glucose) in the blood stream, something interferes with the entry of that sugar into the body’s cells where it is required for the life sustaining energy of those cells. With no sugar in the cells, the cell dies in a very short period of time.

A highly complicated disease entity, diabetes has been classified according to what pathway of energy metabolism has been disrupted. Fortunately with Diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats most cases can be treated successfully with Insulin injections.

Unusual Dog Names - Top Tips On What NOT To Call Your Dog

Unusual Dog Names - Top Tips On What NOT To Call Your Dog

By Marion Herbertson

I used to bring my dog to the local off-leash park at least once a week. There was a girl with a chocolate lab puppy named Jeter. Now, I’m all for unusual dog names and naming your dog after somebody you really like… but she must have felt REALLY stupid screaming “JETER!” across the park when the pup would wander off.

Naming your dog can be one of the most entertaining parts of pet ownership; it can also be one of the most difficult decisions you have to make. My family quite regularly falls out over the issue of naming a new pet! Unusual dog names are really popular choices, but here are some helpful hints to keep in mind:

About Dogs - A Puppy For Christmas? Not Quite

About Dogs - A Puppy For Christmas? Not Quite

Krista Mifflin from the “About Dogs” Blog suggests…

Do it the Right Way
If you are dead set on getting that special someone a puppy for Christmas, be absolutely sure that someone wants the responsibilities and commitment involved and can handle the expenses of having a dog. Anything less than that is both unfair and a grave disservice to both the puppy and the person.
