Emery, 168780

Emery is a very lucky boy with a sad story to tell. Emery was found stray in the city’s North End on October 27. It was obvious that he was in pain, as he had a very large injury to his neck- someone had allowed him to grow without removing his collar, and it had become deeply embedded into his neck! He was rushed to the emergency clinic to begin antibiotics, and we proceeded with surgery to repair his wounds. Emery seems to like other dogs if they are respectful of him. We would love to send Emery home to a loving family (kids 12years+ and without small pets) where he will be treated like a family member! Adoption fee includes his neuter, vaccine, vet exam, pet insurance, City license & more!
Tigger, 167687

Tigger’s owner had to surrender him along with 3 other pets when their new residence would not accept pets- his two canine friends have found homes, and his fellow feline, Snickers, is also waiting to be adopted. Tigger is a quieter, shy boy who plays well with children and other cats. Tigger is very people-oriented and is always happy to have a visitor. A very special fee applies if you would consider both Snickers & Tigger! Fee includes vaccine, vet exam, pet insurance, neuter, tattoo and more!

Monkey, 168487

Monkey is a sweet mature cat, 8 years old, used to living with another feline. Her owner had allergies and surrendered Monkey on October 22. Monkey seems sad to be here and we’re sure she’d be much happier in a loving home! As an older cat, her adoption fee is $40.00 and includes her spay, vet exam, vaccine, FIV/FeLV test and more!
Darla, 168655

Darla is one of 12 rabbits needing homes at The Winnipeg Humane Society. Darla’s owner was about to let her loose in the city’s Weston area before a by-passer intervened and saved her life, and the life of her friend Suhki, who is also available for adoption. Rabbits are intelligent, rewarding pets who are often and sadly misunderstood. Rabbits are similar to a dog in the amount of interaction they require, and the fact that many can be littertrained! Adoption fee for rabbits is $39.00 and includes their spay/neuter (a ~$200.00 value!) vet exam, 14-day health period and more. Come see us if you think a rabbit is right for you!

Volunteering at an animal shelter is a great way for children to learn responsibility and prepare for adopting a family pet. However, it can be tough to find organizations and activities that are child-friendly, particularly if the child in question is younger than about 10. Some rescue groups and shelters don’t permit anyone under 18 to volunteer, for reasons of liability. However, with persistence and creativity, it’s possible to get children involved in volunteering.

President-Elect Barack Obama announced yesterday in his acceptance speech after winning the US presidency that a puppy will be moving into the White House with the Obama family. Michelle Obama said in a recent TV interview that the family would like to adopt a rescue dog. Imagine being the shelter volunteer who’s busily cleaning out runs or scooping litterboxes when the First Family walks in to adopt a dog!
Malia, 10, has expressed interest in a Goldendoodle, but the family hasn’t yet announced whether or not she’ll get the requested “designer dog.” Sasha, 7, has not states a breed preference. Malia is allergic to dogs, so the lucky pooch will need to have a hypoallergenic coat.

Stanley, 164781

Stanley is a great little Terrier mix (~20lbs) who needs a home- he has been with us since August 20, when the Thompson Humane Society flew him down. Prior to that, he’d been rescued from Rankin Inlet! Stanley has come a long way in the hopes of finding lifelong happiness. This handsome wiry-coated little guy needs a home with an experienced dog person who can instill good manners. He requires a confident leader he can look up to, and an active home to keep him exercised. Kids 16years+. No couch potatoes or pushovers, please. Stanley’s adoption fee includes his neuter, vet exam, vaccine, Rabies, behaviour assessment and more!
Prince, 161302

Prince is a 3 ½ year old neutered male cat whose owner surrendered him due to moving. Prince is available for adoption at one of our 10 Satellite Adoption Centres (SACs), Best West St. James, 1150St. James Street, 783-0952. Prince’s adoption fee includes all regular shelter services- neuter, vet exam, vaccine, Rabies vaccine FIV/FeLV test and more! Adopt as a longtime resident for only $39.50.

Rhinoceros, 165070

Hi! I’m not nearly as big as my name makes me sound! I am a 4 ½ month old orange and white tabby. I was rescued from a woodpile in the country in the nick of time- my future was not looking good and I’m lucky to be here today. I was a bit scared but have come around nicely- I can still be a timid boy. I did really well in my foster home and would be happy to join a loving family very soon. My adoption fee includes my vet exam, neuter, vaccine, FIV/FeLV test and more!
Sasha, 166095

Sasha is an intelligent, energetic 2 year-old Border Collie/Shepherd whose owner surrendered her in September. Sasha will benefit from some training- she is keen to learn but has not been worked with to her full potential. Sasha is housebroken and walks well on leash. She loves to play with a ball, and seems to get along well with a variety of dogs. Sasha is an affectionate, people-oriented girl who is best suited to a home with people 15yrs+ and with someone who has had a dog before.

The first time a stray found me, I was completely unprepared for the situation. A Cocker Spaniel turned up in the courtyard outside my apartment and proceeded to evade me for nearly two hours before finally permitting himself to be captured. He snarled and snapped as I slipped a loop of leash around his neck, but as soon as he realized he’d been caught but not harmed, he turned from a growling feral into a wiggly, fearful puppy. My plan to simply capture him in order to keep him out of the road and then call Animal Control evaporated when he put his head on my knee and sighed.

We just talked about why you should never buy a pet at a pet store, but why should you adopt instead? Well, setting aside that you’ll save a life and give a wonderful animal a second chance, thriftiness also comes into play when you choose the adoption option. There are many reasons adoption is the best financial choice. Here are a few.

This post was submitted to heighten awareness about animal shelter adoption. Adopt a pet today!

- Monster at 4 1/2 weeks, fitting into the palm of one of my hands.
During my time as a foster home for kittens, I often got a telephone call 24 hours or less before my newest foster kittens would be delivered. I worked with a rescue that often saved kittens literally minutes before euthanasia time at crowded municipal shelters, so short notice was the status quo as a foster Mom. Having spent nearly a year on the foster list already, I didn’t think much of it when I got a phone call telling me three kittens, four and a half weeks old, were in need of placement and could be picked up the same afternoon in a particular Petsmart parking lot.
I expected the usual: A dirty, scraggly, slightly underweight batch of mewing kittens upset at being separated from Momma and stuffed into a carrier, who would gain weight and confidence within a few days of coming home with me and starting on a weaning formula mixed with dry kitten food. What I got was something I don’t think any foster pawrent is ever completely prepared for. The carrier had, as advertised, three very young kittens inside, but one was fading quickly.
