PetLvr Mailbag: Entertaining an Inside Cat

Dear PetLvr Mailbag,

We moved a couple years ago, and the cat went from being an outside/inside cat to wholly an inside cat. He seems really really bored though, looking for ways to help him transition easier- he’s not getting any exercise and he’s gained a lot of weight. I’ve tried a lot of different toys, but nothing seems to amuse him.

How can I help him be happy and healthy in his new lifestyle?

PetLvr Mailbag: Canine Oral Fixation is Curable

Dear  PetLvr Mailbag,

One of my dogs compulsively licks. He’s always licking at my hands, face, ear, arms, legs, anything he can. Whenever I pet him, he just tries to lick my hand. How the hell do I get him to stop? I’ve tried scolding, yelling, flicking him and saying “no lick!” but nothing works.

Any idea?

PetLvr Mailbag: Exuberant Greetings Cause Consternation

Dear PetLvr Mailbag,

I have a pit lab mix that loves too much. She is about 55 lbs and strong as an ox. She has been trained to not jump on me when I come home and she won’t jump on my S.O., but she goes nuts and wants to tackle everyone that comes over. But even with me she bounces off of the furniture and wants to jump but tries to control herself. She is strong as hell and she jumps, licks and is generally a spaz with every adult able bodied. She is better with me, my S.O., little kids and usually with old or handicapped people. But everyone else, look out!

We call her Our Lady of Unwanted Facials. What can I do to get her to chill and let people come in with out being tackled?

Top Five Ways to Have a Better-Behaved Dog in 15 Minutes a Day

It’s not always easy to find time for your dog, especially if you have work, a family, school, and other committments weighing heavily on your time. However, it doesn’t always take hours of hard work to prevent problem behaviors like barking, chewing, jumping, nipping, pacing, and begging. Eliminating a problem behavior that’s firmly entrenched can be very time-intensive, but if you’ve got an average dog and want to prevent future problems while improving her current behavior, all you need is an extra 15 minutes a day.

That doesn’t mean you can replace meeting your dog’s exercise needs with these 15 minute training sessions. However, if you can give up one section of the paper, 15 minutes of surfing the web, or half of a TV program, and dedicate that time instead to training your dog, here are five ways you can use that time to improve your relationship with your dog and build productive behaviors while preventing undesirable ones. Why “NO!” is a No-No

It’s a familiar scene to many pet owners: Fido is gnawing the couch or has gotten into the trash and is dragging rubbish all over the new carpet. Naturally, your first reaction may be to shout, “No!” Fido stops and drops the moldy chicken casserole as you chant, “No! No! No! Bad dog!”

He stopped, right? So what could possibly be wrong with telling your dog, “No?” More →

You’ve got a puppy. Congratulations! Now is the time to prevent behavior problems in adulthood. Many serious issues can be prevented by properly raising your pup. High-Energy Dog + Apartment: Exercise Can Avert Disaster

The subprime mortgage crisis, declines in some sectors of the economy, and a rising cost of living have led to more families moving out of houses and into apartments, townhomes, and condos. I see ads on Craigslist or in the newspaper almost every day, reading something like, “Free Border Collie. Have to move into an apartment and he won’t be happy there. Needs a yard.”

Does apartment living with a high-energy dog always spell disaster? Do all high energy dogs need a yard and a spacious house in order to be happy? While some dogs simply can’t function in an apartment, the majority of high-energy dogs can adjust to apartment living, and though the situation’s not ideal, it’s certainly a better plan than giving away a family member because of necessary changes in one’s living situation. Its Time For a Dog Party Celebration

It’s Time For a Dog Party Celebration

By Shirley Purdy

Did you know that a dog party celebration is a wonderful pick-me-up!

When women feel down and need a bit of pampering, we can retreat to our favorite spa and indulge in being thoroughly spoilt. Sometimes we go to the shops and spend money on totally unnecessary things… but it feels good! Maybe, even organise a party for a group of friends, with lots of our favorite food and drink.

Our pets, on the other hand, don’t get the opportunity to go off to the Spa and be spoilt, unfortunately! However, you can now spoil your four-legged, furry friend and organize a party for them, giving them the similar kind of tender loving care.
