IAMS Newsletter: P&G Pet Care Update on Menu Foods Recall

P&G Pet Care Update on Menu Foods Recall

P&G Pet Care Update

April 6, 2007

Dear Consumer:

As promised, we are continuing to keep you updated on the Menu Foods recall.

On April 5, 2007, Menu Foods amended its cuts-and-gravy pet food recall to include food manufactured beginning November 8, 2006.

No new Iams or Eukanuba products have been added to the recall list. In accordance with Menu Foods’ amendment, P&G Pet Care has amended the voluntary recall dates in the United States and Canada on previously recalled Iams and Eukanuba canned and foil pouch “wet†cuts-and-gravy-style cat and dog food products manufactured by the affected Menu Foods plant. The amended code dates are 6312 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197.

No Iams or Eukanuba dry pet food products have been affected by the Menu Foods recall or this amended Menu Foods recall. P&G Pet Care already implemented a full voluntary recall of the affected wet products from store shelves in the U.S. and Canada. As a result of these precautionary measures, all the dry and wet pet foods that P&G Pet Care continues to sell do not contain wheat gluten ingredients from any supplier.

For a complete list of affected products, go to the Menu Foods Web site at: www.menufoods.com/recall

We want to stress again that you can confidently feed all of your pets any of our dry foods, as well as the wet foods not affected by the Menu Foods recall. If you have any questions about the recalled products, please click here to see the specific list of recalled wet pouch and canned products.

P&G Pet Care is deeply committed to pet well-being and our top priority is to help you care for your dog and cat family members. We will continue to provide you with meaningful updates. If you have additional questions, not answered on our Web site FAQs, please call us at 1-800-882-1591.

P&G Pet Care Update on Menu Foods Recall

P&G Pet Care Update

March 30, 2007

Dear Consumer:

As promised, we are continuing to keep you updated on the Menu Foods recall.

We know the Menu Foods recall has caused concern, frustration and anger among many pet lovers, including many of our own employees and their families. We want you to know that we care deeply, and we continue to take action on your behalf.

We want to comment on the new announcement today (Friday, March 30, 2007) by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that they have found a substance called melamine in the wheat gluten of recalled products, and not the aminopterin, as earlier suspected by the New York Foods Laboratory.

We can reassure you:

First, there is no melamine or aminopterin in any of our Iams and Eukanuba dry pet foods on store shelves.

In fact, Iams and Eukanuba dry pet foods to DO NOT contain wheat gluten. Our dry dog and cat foods are made exclusively by P&G Pet Care and not by Menu Foods.

Pet owners can feel safe and confident in feeding all Iams and Eukanuba dry foods, as well as any wet foods that are not on the Menu Foods recall list. Click here to see the specific list of recalled wet pouch and canned products.

We want to review the key actions we’ve taken:

* We immediately worked with retailers to remove from store shelves the small number of our wet pouch and canned products affected by the Menu Foods recall.

* We immediately suspended production of all our foods manufactured at the affected Menu Foods Emporia, Kansas plant.

* We have shared all of our data and continue to cooperate fully with FDA, which is leading this important investigation.

* A task force of prominent North American veterinary health care experts, convened by Iams to review the recall, recently agreed: “Veterinarians and pet owners should feel safe recommending and feeding Iams and Eukanuba dry foods.â€

March 22, 2007

We want to provide an update on the recent recall of “wet†pet foods produced by Menu Foods, Inc.

We are deeply saddened by this situation. We know it has caused a lot of concern and has touched pet lovers throughout North America, including our own employees. We’ve received a lot of questions, so we want to give you the latest information.

First, we want to assure you that this recall affects only a small portion of our “wet†pet food products manufactured at the Menu Foods plant in Emporia, Kansas. We have a variety of canned wet food products that are currently available on store shelves that are not affected in any way by this recall.

We also want to assure you that our Iams and Eukanuba dry foods are not affected by the recall, and are readily available in stores. These foods are not part of the recall – there are no concerns at all about dry food. P&G manufactures Iams and Eukanuba dry foods at our own plants, not at Menu Foods.

You may wonder why some “wet†food was produced at Menu Foods. In fact, virtually every pet food company commonly uses outside partners for special or small volume items. Nonetheless, the different branded products made by Menu are not “the sameâ€. Our Iams and Eukanuba pet foods have unique recipes and important ingredient differences that distinguish them from other pet food brands.

Because of our concern for pets and their well-being, we took immediate action to voluntarily participate in Menu Foods’ “wet†food product recall and to work with retailers to get the small portion of our “wet†products affected by the recall off all store shelves in the U.S. and Canada.

Until the root cause of this pet health issue is found, we will not produce any more of these products at the Emporia plant. We’ll keep you updated when we have more information.

Pets are an important part of all of our families. P&G Pet Care employees share your concerns and are firmly committed to you and the health of your pet. We are working hard to respond to your questions, and provide the information and help you need. We value your trust and confidence during this extremely difficult time.
