Top 5 Reasons to Adopt a Pet This Holiday

So many struggling families had to give up their pets due to the economy and many shelters are still caring for and trying to get these same pets adopted. Taking a dog or cat into your home can be a joyous occasion, so what better time to adopt than during the holiday? Below are the top five reasons why you should add a cuddly fur baby to your family this season.

1. Dogs and cats from shelters often already have their initial vaccinations and preliminary care. Usually, the main expenses you have to worry about is paying for the adoption fee, food and the spaying/neutering. An added plus is that some shelters are offering discounted spaying/neutering services, so you will walk away less broke than you think and will still have money for odds and ends (cat litter, cat litter box, leashes, collar, etc.). Because shelters are dedicated to finding long-term homes for these animals, you might be able to catch more deals like a complimentary bag of food.
2. Pets can bring joy and unconditional love to the entire family. If you’re trying to spend less this year, why not invest in one present and one present only? As long as everyone is willing to put forth the effort, a pet can teach your family about responsibility and compassion.
3. You can find a pet that matches your lifestyle and personality. A dog might not be right for you if you’re not going to be home enough to take it outside and walk it, but a cat is independent and more self-sufficient.
4. It’s a given that there will be challenges to overcome when you get your new pet home, but what about all of the adventures that are ahead? Plus, when no one else is around or there to provide comfort, you can always count on your pet to be there and listen.
5. The holiday season is about companionship and helping those in need, so why not do your part and save a life. Remember, not all shelters are no-kill. Over the next few weeks, take time to visit local animal shelters as well as holiday pet adoption events. Even if you’re unable to take in another pet, you can at least spread the word and try to help these deserving animals in other ways.
