No, I’m not asking in a roundabout way whether or not you own a bird. Twitter is a microblogging website that allows users to send short messages of 140 characters or less. You can “follow” other users on Twitter, and receive their updates on your cell phone or online. Anyone can use Twitter. Celebrities like Lance Armstrong and P. Diddy are among Twitter’s most popular microbloggers. The newest Twitter trend, however, has less to do with famous faces than cute, fuzzy ones.
Dogs and cats are twittering in droves (with owners or handlers helping by typing their Tweets), from housepets chatting about their lives to show dogs sharing tales of excitement to rescue dogs seeking adoptive homes. Twitter has proved both a fun way for pet lovers to make friends and a great method of raising funds and awareness for pet-related issues.
Pets Who Twitter
There are too many Twittering pets to list here, but a few of my favorites:
Daisy the Curly Cat: Daisy is a Devon Rex cat who Twitters about her life, cat toys, and learning tricks through clicker training. Daisy also has a blog.
Romeo the Cat: Romeo is a Twittering pet with a purpose. He’s raising money to help rescue animals find homes! For every follower, $0.05 is donated to animal rescue efforts.
Tatiana the Dog: Tatiana is a multi-talented Dachshund who not only Twitters, but also posts videos of herself online.
Neighborhood Dog: The Neighborhood Dog is an “everydog” Twittering about life as an ill-behaved pooch roaming your neighborhood, chasing the Common Squirrel, napping, scratching, and stealing barbecue.
Want Your Pet to Twitter?
I can’t help you teach your pet to use a computer and type her own information into Twitter, but if you’re willing to help, your pet, too, can be a Twitter microblogger. First, you’ll need to register for a Twitter account, using your pet’s name. Just head to Twitter.com and follow the very simple directions to walk you through setting up an account. Then head to your pet’s account settings to upload a picture, choose a background, and more.
Now, you’re ready to Tweet! Write your pet’s first update in the box that says “What are you doing now?” It’s not mandatory to answer that question; you can Tweet whatever you want. A good first Tweet is something like “My human mom just helped me set up my Twitter account, looking forward to meeting some cool pets!”
Next, find some other pets to follow– use Twitter’s search function to look for fellow Twitter pets.

Part of me thinks this is ridiculously stupid but the other part of me wants to sign up…
I think pets twittering is a great idea, and an amusing one. Especially like the twitterer who is donating money to animal rescue.
