Last week, I was able to visit London Aquarium and I thought that I would take some photos so that I share my experience and write a short guide about what you can expect from the largest display of aquatic life in Europe. London Aquarium has three floors split into 14 zones and there are up to 400 species on show throughout the 50 display tanks. Each zone represents a different underwater habitat from small rivers and lakes to tropical rainforests and oceans from around world.

The WHS has over 260 cats and kittens awaiting good homes…. Maybe yours? We have 9 Satellite Adoption Centres located throughout Winnipeg; log onto www.winnipeghumanesociety.mb.ca to find one near you!
Monique, 157854

Monique was found in the St. James area after she’d been meowing outside someone’s door all day and night. Despite being spayed, she had no ID for us to trace to an owner. Monique is a great cat who staff, volunteers and visitors are very fond of. Monique was found with some hairloss and after a period of time in her foster home, it was determined she likely has food allergies; her condition is now being mainly controlled by diet. This longterm, extra-friendly girl will be adopted for $39.50; fee includes health exam, pet insurance and more!
Alley, 161709

Alley’s owner had to move into a no-pets-allowed apartment block and was forced to surrender her beloved pet to the shelter to find another home. Alley is a nice, laidback spayed female who deserves another chance. Alley is easy to handle and friendly; at 5 years old, this mature kitty is used to living in a home setting and we are confident she will adjust quickly to her new home. Adoption fee includes her health exam, vaccine, pet insurance and more!

This post was written by guest author Dave Stewart.
In 2000, I was living in a townhouse just outside of Baltimore; we had finally got a fence and I longed to get a dog. My wife, on the other hand, was not crazy about the idea. You see, she grew up in Jamaica and was not keen on having a dog or any other kind of animal living in the house. I had managed to persuade her into 4 cockatiels but anything beyond this was out of the question. We had three children at the time and 3 children and 4 cockatiels were quite enough. To make matters worse, we had tried a dog from the SPCA and he was a runner; that is to say. if the door opened, he ran and ran far, so he had to go back to the SPCA.
Growing up I had a sheltie. His name was Mickey and after getting married he stayed with my parents; he loved us all so this was okay with me, plus I couldn’t have pets in our apartment at the time. As a result, I tried to convince my wife to get a sheltie, but she was having none of it. Then I began my work. I had an old picture of Mickey and me, so I put it on my night stand. Not long after, I bought book about shelties. Then, my birthday rolled around and do you know what my mother sent me? A sheltie. on the front of a birthday card. That went on to the night stand too. I had quite a little sheltie display going, my wife called it a shrine.

Sitting patiently by your side, your dog nuzzles your thigh and scooches closer to the kitchen table. His sniffing gets frantic as if he is trying to create a vacuum to suck up your evening dinner. You say “no” in a firm voice, but he can’t resist the smells coming from your dish so a bark escapes from his mouth, which ends in a whine. He looks up at you with those pleading eyes-how can you resist? Just a crumb of bread and taste of hamburger won’t hurt, right? But over time that crumb and taste turns into an entire portion or maybe even a double portion. Before you know it, your dog or cat is too heavy and tired to move and its face is hidden in the rolls bulging from its neck.
Maybe you think you have more self-control than that, but approximately 500,000 pets have become obese, and there has been a 10% increase since the previous year. Although you and your pet receive immediate satisfaction from extra treats, the long-term affects can be lethal to your pet’s well being. Obese pets often suffer from respiratory problems such as asthma as well as other ailments like arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, liver problems, etc.

A sense of home can be felt in the soft, cotton of a blanket and even in the cozy embrace of a teddy bear. So even though you might have to move to a new home, there can still be a sense of the old, familiar home. Incorporating items like this into your move can help alleviate some of the stress that your pet will experience during the transition. Unfortunately, you cannot verbally explain to your pet what is going on, but you can try to explain it to them by using memorable scents and providing them with food, water, shelter and, of course, love.
When it comes to cats, it can be challenging to make an outdoor cat an indoor cat. The difficult part is keeping them indoors, because they will sneak and try to find a way to return to the outdoors. However, you can try to teach your cat to walk on a harness until it becomes familiar with the new neighborhood. If it’s too dangerous to let your cat roam free in your new neighborhood, consider allowing your cat to venture out onto the balcony or enjoy the view and fresh air from the window. Keep food and water or treats on the balcony to encourage the cat to stay put. Netting or a fence can prevent the cat from jumping off of the balcony. Leaping from high places can result in severe injury and even death, which is why it’s also important to double-check the strength of the screens in your windows and doors.

You’ve undoubtedly noticed that your dog is much smaller than a horse. (Well, most are anyway.) Nevertheless, most horses are much more frightened of dogs than the reverse. That creates unique problems - for dog, horse and the person who has to govern both.
In this case, unlike other animal training areas, it helps very little to start the interaction out when both animals are young. Young horses are at least as skittish as older ones, and are often accompanied by a mare. Neither is naturally fond of nor curious about puppies. To a horse, nearly everything but their owners and a few other horses are threats - at least until they’re mature.

Mickey, 159607

Mickey is a 3-month-old neutered male who came in with another kitten and two adult cats when their owner didn’t return to pick them up from a relative who was cat-sitting. Mickey was in foster care for the last while as he was initially too young for adoption. Mickey is one of over 200 cats and kittens needing homes at The WHS. Adoption fee includes spay or neuter, health exam, vaccine, pet insurance and more!
Cadet, 158567

Cadet was a stray brought in from the Elmwood area in early May; despite having a collar on he was never claimed. Cadet had little training and manners when he came to us; our Behaviour department has been working hard on preparing him for life in a home setting. This smart 1 ½ year old Husky mix has great potential with the right owner; he seems to like calm, respectful dogs but will require a home without small pets. Cadet needs an adult home where he will receive the consistency and education required to turn him into a well-rounded dog, with someone confident and experienced with dogs. Cadet is available for adoption from our Behaviour office, so please ask to see him when you arrive. Adoption fee includes his neuter, health exam, vaccine, pet insurance, City of Winnipeg license and more!

In the middle of the earthquake are is the Wolong National Nature Reserve, which houses about 150 highly endangered Giant Pandas. There was at least one death of a giant panda (nine-year-old Mao Mao, a mother of five at the breeding centre, was discovered crushed by a wall in her enclosure).
