Another New Author on PetLvr!

Hello to all readers of the LVR series of blogs and everyone who is part of the HART network. My name is Robert, you can find my author page here . I will be here at PetLvr.com and also over at FishLvr.com, where I will be writing about my passion in life…Fish!

I have had a few pets throughout my life including rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and rats but the ones that I have a real obsession with are my pet fish. My first encounter with keeping aquarium fish started in my childhood when my sister and I kept a pair of goldfish in a small aquarium. We cleaned the water out once a week and fed the fish daily.

What To Do If You Find A Stray Dog

It happens to every pet lover eventually. You’re on your way to work, out walking your own dogs, or running an errand, and a loose dog crosses your path with no owner in sight. What now?

Can you approach the dog?

If your dogs are with you, secure them in your car or home before approaching a strange dog. Even if both dogs display friendly body language, the stray may be unvaccinated or dog-aggressive.

What to Expect When Your Kid’s Expecting a Pet (But You’re Not Ready)

So you promised your child a pet for his birthday, or for Christmas, or if she did a particularly difficult chore, and forgot about it. Of course, the kid didn’t, and now you’re on the hook, but aren’t sure you’re really ready for a new family pet. It’s not an uncommon predicament, and today we’ll explore how you can handle this situation without disappointing your child or taking on a committment for which the family isn’t ready.

First, it’s important to figure out whether or not your family really is prepared for a new pet. Ask yourself the following questions: More →

WHS Ad - May 28, 2008 - Please Adopt Me

Dabbu & Jackie, 139981/139984

Dabbu & Jackie are a dynamic duo who cannot bear to be apart! This sweet couple was surrendered when their owner moved. They seem quite dependant on one another and if at all possible we’d like to keep them together- a very special adoption fee would apply. Dabbu, the Siberian Husky is ~2 ½ years old and Jackie, the Lab is about 4 years old. They seem okay with other dogs but require a home without cats or small animals. Both dogs are best suited to kids 12 years+ as they can be shy in new situations.

Oliver, 156835

Oliver is a shy boy who was found stray in the Maples alongside another kitty, who was lucky and adopted soon after arriving here. This super friendly and sociable handsome 1-year-old is great with other cats and has been neutered, vaccinated for Rabies and FIV/FeLV tested negative! Oliver is available for adoption at one of our nine Satellite Adoption Centres, Petcetera on Regent Avenue, 661-0790. Log onto www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca to see more cats and kittens available in-shelter and at our Satellite locations! Same adoption fees & services apply.

Can Cats Be Trained To Get Along With Rats?

One question that I frequently hear from prospective rat owners is, "I have a cat. Will the rats be safe with a cat in the house?"

Unfortunately, there is no single right answer to that question. In fact, there are as many answers as there are cats and owners. Some cats have a very high prey drive and will attack any small mammal introduced into the home. Other cats couldn’t possibly care less that a "prey item" is sitting on the kitchen table stealing tidbits from the humans’ breakfasts. Most kitties fall somewhere between these two extremes.

High-Energy Dog + Apartment: Exercise Can Avert Disaster

The subprime mortgage crisis, declines in some sectors of the economy, and a rising cost of living have led to more families moving out of houses and into apartments, townhomes, and condos. I see ads on Craigslist or in the newspaper almost every day, reading something like, “Free Border Collie. Have to move into an apartment and he won’t be happy there. Needs a yard.”

Does apartment living with a high-energy dog always spell disaster? Do all high energy dogs need a yard and a spacious house in order to be happy? While some dogs simply can’t function in an apartment, the majority of high-energy dogs can adjust to apartment living, and though the situation’s not ideal, it’s certainly a better plan than giving away a family member because of necessary changes in one’s living situation. Working Terriers

Terriers were bred from their very beginnings to perform services. In Great Britain that often took the form of breeding programs to produce a dog that would hunt fox, chase badgers or kill rats. While those activities still take place, the average modern terrier’s working life has changed a great deal.

In many instances, their role is simply that of a watchdog. Many, as diverse as the Staffordshire Pit Bull Terrier or the Fox Terrier perform that function extremely well. Territorial and loyal to the family they bond with early in life, they will guard a home and alert at the first sound of a stranger.
