Be The Pack Leader In Your Own Home

goldendoodle
This year, Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer , became my mentor. What is he about? He is about teaching us that the human family is not only part of the pack, the human family has to become the pack leader! From the tiniest to the oldest member in the household.

A pack to a dog is any group of people and animals that it lives with. A pack has a set of rules, and those in the pack have to follow those rules, otherwise, there are consequences.

Marmalade & Caroline, 155662/666

Marmalade & Caroline’s owner passed away and there was no one able to take them on, so they came to the WHS on March 9. These beautiful ~6 year old cats rely on each other for companionship and company- we would be very sad to break this ‘family’ up and are very optimistic someone will open their heart & home to both cats. A very special adoption fee applies- $80.00 for both cats and includes their vet exam, vaccine, pet insurance and more!

Shady, 133369

Shady may have been featured before but as our only longterm dog, we need to get this beautiful Norwegian Elkhound mix into a permanent home of her own! Shady is a really sweet and affectionate doggy who weighs in at about ~45lbs and stands just over knee-height at her shoulder. Shady likes to go for walks and is really great on her head collar. Shady is a smart, energetic and playful dog who will benefit from an active home to keep her busy & happy. Shady is 1 ½ years old and loves to play with other dogs- if they can keep up with her! Shady was adopted first as a puppy in late 2006, but has basically been in our care- through absolutely no fault of her own- since November 2007. Shady is a staff & volunteer favorite and we are puzzled as to why she’s been passed over! Shady has been with us for too long, and we would love to see her adopted to a loving owner/family one day very soon- she is too wonderful not be enjoyed! Adoption fee includes vet exam, vaccine, Rabies, heartworm test, pet insurance and more!

Is Your Canine Ready For The Summer?

I was taking a long walk in the cool spring air this morning. Actually, very early this morning! I had my golden and my black lab with me. On leash!

There are two issues that stood out for me concerning our 4 legged companions.

I Am Here For The Week - Welcome To My Dog World

Good Morning Hart and Readers,

I am a guest blogger here for the week. I am going to enjoy this immensely. Somehow it’s different when one is blogging as a guest than it is blogging in your own blog. It’s like being invited into a friend’s home.

I am always ready to share my pet stories and information.

Housebreaking Tips For Golden Retrievers

Housebreaking is something anyone will want to do no matter the breed of dog they own. Fortunately for the human companions of Golden Retrievers, that’s a much easier task with these intelligent, eager to please pups.

Beginning as early as four weeks for some, but certainly no later than eight weeks of age, Golden Retriever pups have the mental capacity and bladder and bowel control to receive potty training.

If You Ride, You Are a Trainer

By Bonnie Martin

Frequently I talk to, hear of, or read about someone who bought a trained horse and after riding it for a period of time decide that the horse needs to go to a trainer because it has developed a problem. Some of the time it is a matter of the horse “all of the sudden” not doing as well as it did at first. Perhaps, if it is a gaited horse, the desired gait disappears and presents the rider with a rough gait in its place. Or it might be that the horse starts doing something new such as fighting the bit, moving off while being mounted, not stopping well, rearing, spooking, or some other undesirable action that the rider didn’t have a problem with at first.

Before automatically assuming that the horse has a training problem, one should always rule out pain issues-tack, teeth, and soreness. Any of these things can cause a horse to act out in avoidance of pain.

About the Conure

Nanday Conure Image Source: Wikipedia

Conures are charming little birds. These spunky little parrots are small enough to fit easily into most households and large enough to satisfy the desire of someone wanting to own a real parrot. Conures range from quiet, green little birds to slightly raucous brilliant orange and yellow parrots.

Anne, 151772

Anne is a ~6 year old female Domestic Short Hair ‘champagne tortoisehell’. This poor kitty has been with us and awaiting a home since early December, when someone brought her in stray after finding her on Morrow Avenue. Anne is a friendly and sociable cat who is an ambassador as one of our pet visit cats to hospitals & personal care homes! Anne’s adoption fee is only $40.00- this sweet girl deserves a good home of her own! Adoption fee includes spay, vet exam, vaccine, pet insurance, owner handbook & more!

TJ, 155661

TJ and his sister Kittlin were surrendered in March by their owner who was experiencing some health problems. They were brought in with a dog and another cat, both of whom have been adopted. We’d love to be able to keep these two handsome lads together and are offering a reduced adoption fee as an incentive. These kitties are ~3 years old and would be a great choice for a home with other pets. Adoption fee includes spay, vet exam, vaccine, pet insurance, owner handbook & more!
