Exercise and Training Tips For Your German Shepherd

cover2_blank1.jpg
The German Shepherd breed was developed over 100 years ago, as the name suggests, for herding sheep. That activity is less common in the world today, but the basic skills are still much in demand.

GSDs, as they’re sometimes known, will patrol a border for hours, keeping strangers at bay and protecting those within. Seeing some dogs roam back and forth along a fence would suggest a mental problem, or at least a high level of frustration. But German Shepherds enjoy routine, never tire of doing their jobs and thrive when they have a role that keeps them active.

Choosing the Right Pet Bird for You

Birds can be intelligent, enjoyable companions, but choosing the wrong bird can really cause heartache and frustration. How do you choose the right pet bird for you and your family? Before you try to decide which species of bird you want, you may want to think about whether a bird is really the right type of pet for you.

Many people decide to buy a bird because they want to have a pet that provides some company, but doesn’t require a lot of time and energy to take care of. Actually, caring for a bird properly may not be quite as hard for caring for a dog, but it involves a bit more than tossing some seed in the cage every day.

WHS Ad - February 27, 2008 - Please Adopt Me

Thinking of an Easter bunny for someone you know this Easter? Think twice! Rabbits are too often acquired on a whim and end up surrendered to shelters nation-wide; they are the third most surrendered pet to North American shelters. If you want more information on rabbits as pets, visit us or log onto www.rabbit.org to get the information you need to make an informed decision. The WHS saw a 56% increase in the number of rabbits admitted between 2003 to 2007! Macho 151241

151241-macho.JPG
Macho is an incredible cat who was found stray on Church Avenue in November- for some reason, this handsome fellow keeps getting passed over for adoption. Macho is about 3 years old, very friendly and sociable as most Tom cats are and when he purrs has a very loud ‘motor’! This big guy is negative for FIV and FeLV, blood diseases cats can get from going outdoors. Macho is a staff favorite and a hit with the teens at our Roots & Shoots educational program- he will make a great addition to almost any family. Adopt as a longtimer for $39.50!

Bo 152812

152812-bo.JPG
Bo is a complete sweetheart who simply doesn’t fare well in the hectic shelter environment- this boy is used to the comforts of home & family! Bo, a Flat Coated Retriever mix, is one of those really smart and sensitive dogs we receive all-too-often who become stressed and anxious here. He needs to be adopted soon for his own mental health. When out of his kennel/room, Bo is a very low-key, laid back and well mannered doggy who has great manners and listens well- does he sound like someone you’re looking for? As he can be a timid boy, we suggest he’s best for kids 12yrs+; we know he’ll make a terrific companion for his new family.

Rabbits reach sexual maturity at about age six months. It varies somewhat by breed. Spaying is the surgical procedure carried out on females in which their mature organs are removed, neutering involves removing the testes of the male but not the penis - neutering is not the same as full castration.

Dismounting and Untacking Your Horse

cover2_blank.jpgYou’ve had your very first experience with riding a horse and it was absolutely wonderful. However, even if you’re having the best time of your life, you can’t stay up there forever. Eventually, you will need to get off that horse. Luckily, it is not very hard to dismount a horse. In fact, it is actually quite easy, as long as you don’t just try to jump off.

Before you do anything else, you will need to make sure your horse is no longer moving. After all, you wouldn’t try to step out of a moving car, right? A moving horse is just as dangerous. Once your horse is standing still, it is time to swing out of the saddle. Remember, just because he has stopped, there is no guarantee that your horse won’t start moving again, so be sure you never let go of the reins, even after you are on the ground.
