Pepper, 115515

115515-pepper.jpg
Pepper is a good girl who came to us in December after being left in an apartment suite when her owner moved away. Pepper is not quite 3 years old- she likes male cats but would prefer to be the only female cat in her next home. We suspect Pepper will be happiest with older children. Her adoption fee includes her spay, tattoo, vaccine, pet insurance, Rabies vaccine & more!

Yobbo, 150445

150445-yobbo.jpg
Yobbo is a ~3 year old male Australian Shepherd mix found at Grand Beach in November, suspected of having an injured leg or paw. Our veterinary staff were able to determine that thankfully he was not injured, but born with one leg quite a bit shorter than the other- so it appears he favours one leg when he’s standing. We don’t think it will cause him much grief in the future provided he’s kept at a healthy weight. We also found Yobbo was positive for heartworm- he was able to be treated here and we think he’ll be just fine! Yobbo likes cats and dogs and shows great family potential.

Get Your Horse Moving

cover2_blank.jpgYou’ve managed to make it up on top of your horse and boy, is it a long way down! Now, how do you get him to move? After all, you don’t want to make an animal this big mad when you are on his back. Surely you aren’t supposed to kick him, right?

Actually, yes, people do kick their horses to get them moving, but it is more like a gentle tap of the heel against the horse’s side than a true kick. You will also need to squeeze his sides and you may even need to gently tap him with a riding crop to signal that it is time for him to move faster or prepare to jump over an obstacle.

Socialization of German Shepherds

Socialization involves getting your dog familiar and comfortable with other dogs, pets and people in their environment. As natural pack animals it’s often easy to do, and sometimes even harder to keep them from interacting at inappropriate times.

Most dogs benefit from socialization. The people around them do too. But German Shepherds and a few other breeds are special cases. They’re often asked to perform special roles, such as police or guard dog, guide dog and other jobs. That means that socialization, while still useful, needs to be carried out much more carefully.

Reading Your Bird’s Body Language

Understanding what your pets are telling you can be a real challenge, even if they can talk. Luckily your bird’s body language speaks just as loudly to allow you to understand exactly how he is feeling.

Rabies Exposure Investigation - in Toronto

According to Toronto Public Health

Puppies sold at a Toronto flea market may have been exposed to rabies. Toronto Public Health is asking anyone who touched or purchased puppies at Dr. Flea’s Flea Market, Booth # 1513, anytime since January 5 to call their local public health unit immediately. Health unit staff will assess your exposure, and determine if you need a rabies vaccine. Rabies, if contracted by humans, is usually fatal. Vaccination can prevent the illness from developing, but must be administered as soon after exposure to the virus as possible.

Training Show Dogs

Over 130 different breeds compete in major dog shows, such as the Westminster in the US or Crufts in the UK. But there’s a good deal more to developing a show dog than simply acquiring a dog of one of those breeds and teaching it to sit or stay.

Within any breed there are dogs that are closer to the ‘ideal’ than others. This ‘conformation’ is an important first criteria. Conformation refers to the specific arrangement of parts - legs, tail, head, ears, etc - that determine the dog’s appearance. Since this is difficult to judge in young puppies, show dogs are often the offspring of other show dogs.

Nail Care Tips For Your Pet Rabbit

Trimming your rabbit’s nails can be a trial. Rabbits are akin to small dogs in that they tend to be fairly high strung. As prey for so many larger species, they evolved to be on a constant look out for danger. Even though they’re safe and well protected in your home, those instincts are still there. Proper technique can help overcome those instincts when they kick in (sometimes literally) to make nail trimming difficult.

First, pick yourself a nice open area, such as the bathroom or living room floor. Lay down a couple of towels, one of which will be used to wrap the rabbit, in order to restrain him or her. The other towel makes it easy to pick up the nail clippings and discard them. Arrange your materials so everything you may need is close at hand. That way you can stay seated near your rabbit for the whole procedure.

Specialized Training: Working and Assistance Dogs

Once upon a time, seeing-eye (guide) dogs were almost the only type of assistance dog around. Over the last few decades, the field has widened considerably.

Today, dogs help the hearing impaired, the blind, wheelchair bound and bedridden. Others simply provide a new kind of therapy for prisoners, burn victims, the clinically depressed or merely home bound.

Training starts before birth by careful selection. It’s no accident that certain breeds tend to be more useful for these roles than others. German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and a few others are favored both for intelligence and temperament.
