Tarantulas as Pets

By Tonia Jordan

Spiders can make great pets! I wouldn’t suggest anyone with arachnophobia (fear of spiders) having one as a pet, but even beginner pet owners can take care of some types of spiders.

Tarantulas are the most common type of spider kept as a pet, and have become more and more popular as a pet in recent years. Although people tend to fear keeping a tarantula as a pet, it is often more harmful to the animal than to the pet owner. Tarantulas can die from a short fall if their abdomen ruptures, so great care must be taken when handling one.

How To Take Care Of Your Pregnant Dogs And Make Them Comfortable

By Jerry Brecken

Humans used to take care only of themselves and their loved ones. Now, people have realized that one’s protection and pampering can go beyond the usual sphere and can even extend to other non-human entities such as animals or pets. The human empathy has reached to the limit that individuals now think that whatever makes a person comfortable will most likely make animals comfortable too.

Such kind of empathy can be seen in cases where dog owners tend to their pregnant pet dogs and provide their immediate needs. On top of these needs is to make sure that your pregnant dogs are as comfortable as possible. The requirements for your pregnant dog’s comfort can be as simple as keeping it healthy and providing a well-made dog bed. Although, there are currently numerous varieties of dog beds available in the market, choosing one is not that hard to do as long as you know what your dog really needs.

Dogs and Chocolate - Will Your Dog Really Get Sick If It Eats Chocolate?

By Alex Page

Dogs and chocolate. I’ve been told since I was a little kid that if my dog ate chocolate, it would kill him. Is it really true? Or is it along the same lines as, “If you eat a watermelon seed, you’ll grow a watermelon in your stomach.” I’ve done some research on dog’s eating chocolate, and here’s what I’ve found out in layman’s terms.

Apparently, chocolate has something in it called theobromine. Theobromine is toxic to dogs. So yes, ingredients in chocolate can be harmful to dogs. But before you go rushing off to the veterinarian because Fido ate a Hershey’s Kiss, here’s what you should know…

How To Deal With Snake Bites And Avoid Being Bitten

By Andrew Routledge

Many people ask me how dangerous are snakes?

The answer is that snakes have accumulated as many myths as sharks over the years. Like shark stories, most general beliefs about snakes have very little foundation in the truth.

However, they still remain animals that have developed unique ways of defending themselves and should be given the respect that they deserve.

Pet Rats - Why They Make Great Pets

By Scott McHenry

Anyone looking for a new pet wants a pet that is clean, socialized and well trained. Most people don’t know that these are all qualities of pet rats!

There are many misconceptions about rats. People think that rats are unclean and carry disease. In fact, rats are quite clean and groom themselves several times a day. These aren’t sewer rats we’re talking about. These pet rats, or fancy rats as they’re called, have been domesticated and bred in captivity for at least 150 years. Pet rats are quite tame after living with humans for so many generations and you’ll find that they are nothing like their stereotypes.

Rats are very intelligent animals. Some consider rats to have intelligence close or equal to that of dogs. Rats are capable of learning to come when their names are called. They can even be litter trained just as easily as training a cat.

Farm Pets and the 4H

By Lance Winslow

Most kids growing up in the city do not know what the 4H Club is all about and most all kids who live in rural areas or in the country know all about the 4H Club. Teaching kids and teens the values necessary to live a good life is very important. The 4H Club teaches responsibility, integrity and real life skills in caring for animals.

Raising an animal to compete in the County or State Fair is a big deal to 4H Members who consistently turn out prize winning animals year after year. If you have kids or teens and you do not know much about the 4H Club then perhaps you should learn and help your children get grounded in the realities of life and responsibility.

Feeding Your Horse - Some Basic Rules

By Ron Petracek

You are what you eat, and this goes for horses as well. Keeping your horse in optimal shape means knowing what to feed, how much to feed, and when to feed. To keep your horse at his healthiest and ensure that his nutritional needs are being met, follow these simple rules.

1.)Weigh your horse. You can’t feed your horse correctly unless you know his weight. But before you bring him into your bathroom and attempt to load him on your scale, you should know that there is an easier, more sensible method. To estimate your horse’s weight, measure his heart girth with a horse weight tape.

Dog Vet Visit Tips

By: Rickie Smith

Vet visits do not have to be a traumatic and stressful one for your beloved pet. No matter how healthy and clean your dog is, the day will come when it will have to see a vet. Your dog must be vaccinated against rabies and other K-9 diseases by law. Only a licensed vetenarian is legally authorized to administer these and the certificates. No doubt there will be other times when your dog becomes ill and a visit to your local vet will be required.

Think about how much you like going to a doctor. The fact is, most people do not like this visit. By the same token, it only makes sense that dogs do not like going to the vet. When you add the fact this poor animal has to put their trust in a total stranger whom they cannot communicate with, it can be even more stressful. A vet visit can be very traumatic for your dog, but it doesn’t have to be. There are several things that you can do to relieve your precious pet of this trauma.
